Walking

“All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.”
~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Did you know?

  • Walking burns as many calories as jogging, but causes far less pressure on the joints!
  • It improves mood and self esteem
  • By walking for 30 minutes, 5 times a week you massively lower your risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and some cancers.
  • … and with the environment in mind – around one third of journeys we take by car/bus are under a mile long. This is less than 20 minutes walking!

These websites contain tools for planning journeys, finding amenities and calculating calories burnt!

Walk London A fantastic website which shows you themed walking routes around London – be it along the Thames, through  wetlands and parks, or in the City. A great tool for planning a weekend stroll.

Walk Score This tool lets you find amenities (such as shops, restaurants,  fitness centres, and many many more) located within walking distance from your home.  Very user-friendly and packed with information!

Walkit This “urban walking route planner” is similar in use to Googlemaps but provides more detailed information – including how much CO2 you save walking (as compared to driving or taking public transport).

Why not take a look at the UCLU Hiking and Walking Facebook page, if you would like to take part in longer walks where you can appreciate beautiful scenery and make friends!
